The SAARC Agriculture Centre (SAC) is the first regional institution established by the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to promote agricultural research and development among its member countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. Headquartered within the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council Complex in Farmgate, Dhaka, Bangladesh, SAC serves as a pivotal platform for fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange in the agricultural sector across South Asia. ​WikipediaSAC+2Wikipedia+2Bangladesh Journals Online+2

Mandate and Functions:

Originally established in 1988 as the SAARC Agricultural Information Centre, it was renamed the SAARC Agriculture Centre in 2007 to reflect its expanded role. The Centre is tasked with:​

• Promoting Agricultural Research and Development: Facilitating collaborative research initiatives to address common agricultural challenges in the region.​

• Technology Transfer: Enhancing the dissemination and adoption of innovative agricultural technologies among member states.​

• Capacity Building: Organizing training programs, workshops, and seminars to strengthen the skills and knowledge of agricultural professionals.​

• Policy Advocacy: Providing policy recommendations to harmonize agricultural practices and standards across South Asia.​

Organizational Structure:

SAC is led by a Director, deputed by the host country, Bangladesh. The Director is supported by regionally recruited Senior Program Specialists (SPS) and General Service Staff (GSS), ensuring a diverse and competent team representing the member nations.

Key Initiatives:

Among its various initiatives, SAC has launched the SAARC Agriculture PhD Scholarship Programme to build the capacity of young scientists in the region. ​SAARC Secretariat
