The Bangladesh SPARRSO, is a state agency concerned with astronomical research and the application of space technology in Bangladesh. SPARRSO works closely with JAXA, NASA and the ESA in environmental and meteorological research. Using Japanese and American satellites, SPARRSO monitors agro-climatic conditions and water resources in Bangladesh

SPARRSO is a statutory body for multidisciplinary research and application-based technology. The organization’s mandate is to use space and remote sensing technology peacefully in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, geology, mapping, water resources, land use, meteorology, environment, geography, oceanography, education and other fields of knowledge and science and to develop such technologies in order to conduct research work for practical application. In 1986, the Atomic Energy Commission established the Automatic Picture Transmission (APT) ground station. Following the launch of the first Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) by the United States in 1972, under the direction of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the ERTS program and Space and Atmosphere Research Center (SARC) were launched in Bangladesh for the purpose of space technology research. Later on, SPARRSO was established from ERTS and SARC in 1960 under the Department of Science and Technology. In 1985, the company was transferred to the Ministry of Defence. In 1991, SPARRSO was transformed into a statutory body by Act No. 29 of the Bangladesh Parliament. In 1995 through a gazette notification, SPARRSO was designated as a “National Focal Point” for space-related activities at home and abroad. Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited SPARRSO on 19 May 1996 to monitor the cyclone situation. Later, the Hon’ble Prime Minister inaugurated the international seminar on ‘Tropical Ecosystem Management’ of SPARRSO on 6 December 1997.
