In 1960 East Pakistan Government established a project named “Establishment of BuildingResearch Center” under the Directorate of Housing and Settlement under the Ministry of Public Works. In 1975 with the highest utilization of indigenous construction materials and limited resources on January 5, the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established the Housing and Building Research Center to address the housing crisis of the large population. Later, it became an autonomous organization under Government of Bangladesh, Ministry of housing & Public Works as “Housing and Building Research Institute (HBRI)”. According to the “Housing and Building Research Institute Act 2018” Structural Engineering & Construction division, Soil Mechanics & Foundation engineering Division, Housing Division and Building Material Division carry out their activities under the direct supervision of the Director General.

HBRI is now running under the general direction and superintendence of the affairs and business of the institute are vested into the Governing Council. The Director is the ex-officio member –Secretary of the Council and the Chief Executive officer of the institute. Over the years the institute has been able to build up necessary laboratory facilities for test/research works and recruit a good number of qualified engineers/architects/scientists with experience and training in home and abroad.
